Panchakarma Therapy
Ayurveda treatments have four basic forms of therapies, which are medicine or drug therapy, Panchakarma, ayurveda diets or nutritional therapies and rejuvenation therapies. In these basic forms, ‘Panchakarma’ is the most important and effective therapy to rebuild the healthy lifestyle. Generally, Panchakarma therapies are done in a natural environment under the guidance of good and experienced ayurveda practitioners.
Panchakarma is developed in India and the word stands for five actions. It is a purifying or eliminating therapy to enhance the metabolism of the body and mind. Generally Panchakarma is done in two ways:
- Treating the doshas (toxic materials) in the by natural herbs and medicines.
- Eliminating the complete doshas from the body.
Unhealthy lifestyle, stress, strain and changes in climate are the main reasons for various toxins in the body. These toxins have to be removed from body in order to keep the well-being of the body. Ayurveda therapies, especially panchakarma can completely remove these toxins from the body and can keep it healthy and powerful.
The five types of treatments in Panchakarma therapy include:
Vamana Karma (use of emetics) – Vamana Karma is used for ‘Kapha’ disorders like Asthma, Cold, Bronchitis and sinus. It is a medicated therapy which removes Kapha toxins accumulated in the body and the respiratory tract.
Virechana (use of laxatives) – Virechana Karma is used to treat pitta disorders like Hyperacidity, skin disorders, Digestive disorders, ulcer, and Constipation
Basti Karma (medicated enema) – Promotes emission in the colon and thus ensures a good health. It is highly beneficial in cleansing and detoxifying the body.

Rakta Mokshana (blood letting) – In this treatment impure blood from the body is removed by using surgical instruments.
The duration of Panchakarma therapy is typically three to seven days.
The physical and mental conditions of a person are considered before prescribing this therapy. Panchakarma is a vital Ayurvedic treatment thus it requires proper guidance and administration and it should not be advised to do with information from a book or article.
